Samuel Knapp Obituary: Jones County Iowa
Died 29 September 1878
Samuel Knapp [Elizabeth's 4th great grandfather] was born January 24, 1817. He was converted at the early age of fourteen, since which time he has lived a consistent Christian. As far back as the bereaved ones can remember, the voice of prayer has been heard morning and evening ascending from the family alter.
January, 1841, he was married to Miss Sarah Whittemore, and in 1843 he with his family emigrated from Maine to Jackson Co., Iowa, where he lived until he moved to Jones county, Wayne township, in 1864.
Our mother died in 1859 and our father was left with a family of children [seven girls, including Elizabeth's 3rd great grandmother Anzonetta], to whom he has been faithful beyond expression, ever striving to teach us by example and precept to speak right, to do right, and to live right.
May 6, 1877, he was married to Miss Eunice Denison, of Jackson township, but now she is bereft of the kindest of husbands, and been left with the care of an infant boy [less than three month old Albert Samuel Knapp].
May the God of the widow and fatherless watch with loving and tender care over her who is most deeply afflicted.
To-day, as we look around and see his empty chair – the clothes he wore – the books he read – and realize that the chair has held his dear form for the last time, our hearts sink within us, and we each say with the psalmist, “I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.” But the thought that he is among the redeemed gives us courage to again take up life’s burdens and go on, hoping at the last to meet the loved ones on the brighter shore.
